Being a single panel comic myself I do appreciate the challenges of coming up with daily single panel strips. I'm also new to Zuda and already I understand that single panel strips are not the favorite of this community or at least have a hard road ahead.

I have to agree with Steve Steiner on his analysis and finding your own clear way of conveying the gags. The problem I find with single panel gags is your work is inevitably often compared to others in the genre. Someone already mentioned Path Nine; and the fact is they're influenced by the daddy of them all: Gary Larson and The Far Side (especially the KFC panel).

here's a great example of what I mean when a gag cartoonist need to establish a "world" and a "set of rules" his characters follow or don't follow. -The tone of the "world, like it's level of violence or wackiness...
************************************************************************
I was begin perusing a collection of old Grahan Wilson gag cartoons at the library. I had no idea who he was or anything about him. I turned to the first page and there was an image of a dirty attic with some long forgotten toys stuffed in a box and coved in cobwebs.
The caption read "The next time he comes up I say we get him!"
And the thought that these ticked off toys where ready to take action for being neglected cracked me up and I was hooked. But it was also great because it prepared me for the dark and sometimes sinister humor of his cartoons.

hey Chuck... I've been thinking of this strip a lot since it went up. I don't try to hide the fact that I'm a humor entry guy. Those are the comics I usually try to encourage and vote for. In fact my next submission is all humor in the MAD magazine spirit.
But yours didn't grab me and I've been trying to figure out why. So here's what I think (for whatever it's worth).
************************************************
I don't think your voice is coming through in these comics. I know you're only presenting 16 comics so it may be unfair of me to say but that's the way Zuda goes. And it's not that I don't think you have a voice but it's hard to find it in these comics. They come off a little cliche to me... A little like you might be feeding off some other single panel gag cartoonist out there. The cloud comics I think are in the right direction...
Let me clarify... When I look at single panel gag cartoonists (people like George Booth and Grahan Wilson to name a couple) they have a way to deliver the joke that's kind of theirs. Sure - they only have 1 panel to work with - but one gets the sense of their whole crazy world and what set of rules that world has in that one panel... It's like those panels are portholes to their world. Even though I'm not a big fan of puns, Plan 9 from last month let you take a look at their world.
Yours aren't quite there yet. Like I said - I see glimmers of it - especially with the before mentioned clouds. I like that you're kind of exploring a theme with them. If you're familiar with George Booth's work - a lot of his cartoons I liked played with mechanics and a hapless car owner. He used a similar set up with a lot of variations on the premise.
**************************
Also - I'd like to mention that recently I've been sketching up some of my own single panel cartoons. It's something I never tried even though a few people said I should give it a shot. It's pretty challenging to sum up a thought or scenario using a sentence or two... especially when I'm used to using multiple panels - So I salute you for your efforts!

Anyway - those are my two cents - I'm interested to hear what you think or if you have any insights

-steve

When I said having a entry as yours in the competition speaks well about the Zuda staff, I wasn´t saying your comic is bad, what I tried to say is for me is really good they can accept two comics as different as Daily Comic,Rumors of War, Hijos de P or mine, into the same competition. I hope that is clear now. I forgot to mention last time I liked the favorite people panel and the agoraphobics joke a lot.

RKB (Radio Kill bot?)
Thank you for your positive comments and questions...I will now try to answer them but it could be hard, I'm currently trying to negotiate peace talks between the mold growth on my bathroom walls and the soap scum on the the shower tiles.

OK-I like it when people tell me my work sucks. It helps me get better. But it only helps me get better when you tell me why. If you were with your friends and told them you hated something 9 times outa 10 the first question out of their mouths will be "Why?". Criticism is fine with me, just as long as its constructive. After being on Zuda for the last 9 months the main problem I see with this site is people basically saying that some comic sucks and calling it a review or a critique. So my rant to Bryy was really just a rant to them. Or I'm an emo crybaby...I haven't decided yet. But, as a former paid music critic I know this all too well...because trust me...sometimes I just wanted to say such awful things...awful awful things...

And secondly, I've thought that clouds have done those things since I was a kid. I love the clouds for they share my sense of humor, which most people don't.

So, 2 comics per page is better than 3 or 4 with this format (although I'd prefer one comic and 16 pages considered to be 8 pages). I have enough of these little horrors to be able to put 4 to a page, but I cut alot out. For example there's one I wish I included where there's this Hamster in a fish tank just floating. The caption underneath reads "Fuzzy was the last Hamster Dylan's parents would ever buy." But it didn't make it despite the reference to my four year old son and his fondness for foreign objects in fish tanks.

But yes, thank you for backing your opinions up. I've seen other comments you've left and I see that you always back up what you say. I will return the favor and review your script for you as I am also reviewing Bryy's comic for him! Also, I don't have a sneezing fetish...lol
Thanks again RKB (Rabbi king beaver?)

Hi, you knew I'd be here sooner, or later. :)
**********************************************************
Well your on going back and forth with Brian has added to my interest in this comic as, humor is not my go to genre. I actually liked this far more than I thought i would, but I have the habit of projecting onto stories, so maybe I'm reading more into it than what you meant -I don't know???
*************************************************************
I don't know if you don't like folks who crit, but don't tell you why they like or don't like something, or if you don't like folks who criticize who don't have a comic they have done themselves, or you don't like fly by night posts that are kind of a little bit of a slam????
***********************************************************
If there is one thing I try to do it's tell somebody why I like or don't like something, and my posts are anything but short. I also have a script blog -i need to be up-dating- if you want to return the crit favor. I wouldn't want you or anyone else to think I was just commenting on your comic without giving you the chance to comment back if you were so inclined.
*************************************************************
You have the same format as pathnine two comics on the page. I would have liked to see a few more 1 panel comics on the page than just 2. You only have 8 screens pack the jokes in there, 3 hell 4 comics a screen, yeah you would cut down on panel size/art but more laughs would be a good thing for a humor comic.
**********************************************************
The art across the screens and colors are fine, it tell's the story well.
************************************************************
SCREEN 1 the sunflower thing didn't really do anything for me./ I loved the clouds wanting to prove the weatherman wrong one. I also did like the connection between the two comics if felt like the clouds were talking about this just above the sunflower sneeze one. Really funny.
*************************************************************
SCREEN 2 the buck 1 didn't make me laugh./ the comparing apples and oranges 1 did, i loved it! plus i use that old saying all the time so...
***********************************************************
SCREEN 3 Do you have some kind of fetish for sneezing??? ;) it looks like a running theme here. I laughed at the spaceman 1. Fleas are funny -see the old WB cartoons-, comics about fleas are funny, so again good stuff here. Writing sells a humor comic for me, and i thought you did an outstanding job.
************************************************************
SCREEN 4 the who a little girl looks up to comic funny cause it's true, and a sad social commentary at the same time./ i liked the Godzillia hippie protest comic as well. i just think Godzillia protester's is a funny idea.
**********************************************************
SCREEN 5 I loved Blood Hunter, it almost got my vote, and I will be reading it also loved 30 days of night, but I took the "I wouldn't have bite you irish man" comic as a little friendly poke at all the vampire comics on dead trees and the web. I do tend to do the whole reader projection thing so I guess that wasn't what you were going for, but it made the comic funnier to me. I'm Irish so that made the comic funnier too./ at the convention made me think of Monk's brother, I wasn't ROFL, but it got me to smile, it these dark economic days that's an accomplishment in and of it's self.
************************************************************
SCREEN 6 ah yes the infamous Republican sock puppet theater comic. I didn't take it as a a dumb swipe at the other-side bryy and jen I took it as a republican making fun of for lack of a better word 'dumb' democratic stereotypes. it looked to me like something you might see on a Rush Limbaugh pod-cast. Rush does his impression of Keith Oberman doing his impression of Limbaugh kind of thing. Like I said maybe reader projection on my part, but everything is sort of in the eye of the beholder anyway. I thought it was one of the best comics cause it's such a open read no matter what side you are on you can see what you want to see. I'm damn glad you put it in here./ baby jail real funny to me because of a personal note. My little sister years ago was mad because my parent's put her in a playpen and started hitting the walls with her sip-ie cup. I put her up to yelling attica! attica! This one got the laughs out of me.
**********************************************************
SCREEN 7 I liked it suicidal is right. I also don't think you were making fun of the NRA, just people's hatred of flying rats./ Hell yes, an arm and a leg for a tank of gas! I loved this comic becaue it is topical. I think you did a good job on mixing up different kinds of humor/jokes.
********************************************************
SCREEN 8 Okay now i think you got a thing for clouds and sneezing.;) I didn't think clouds could be this funny you proved me wrong. I don't know if you know this (and i read it on the net so it might not even be true), but KFC is very popular in Japan, a lot of folks eat their x-mas dinner there and make reservations in advance. (again i read that on the net somewhere), that thought was in my mind as i read the comic, chopsticks for baby chicks??? Sam Little was right twisted genius.
*************************************************************
I don't know what you think of my comments, but i really enjoyed your comic, it was well written and open to different views, it even had some running themes. it was funny to me. The art was fine but the captions/words are what sold it for me.
***********************************************************

Wow...thanks everyone...weird. I'm glad you all like the comic to some degree or another. I agree with some of you that theoretically there should be a separate contest for this style of comic art, but in my opinion it wouldn't be as fun! I grew up fawning over Frank Miller side by side with Bill Waterson and so on. So, this for me is a wondrous thing! I don't think I've got a shot at first, but if i get in the top three it would really show alot of people that comics like mine still have a place in this community! But again, I'd like to say thanks for the kind thoughts...and that one about coffee, toast and USA today...that ones the best, until I figure out what it means!

Daily Comic is a glimpse of the world through the eyes of singer-songwriter Chuck Harrison, who neither writes nor sings songs. It's Hippies protesting giant lizard attacks, flowers screaming when picked, hamsters in fish tanks and vampires allergic to Irish men. These are all the strange ideas that float around the hemisphere and into the mind of one small man-boy. These are my little worldly manifestos, but unlink Marx or Hitler these are meant to make a true point of absurdity. The Daily Comic does not hide behind the conventions, no, it is the bizarre old man on the park bench laughing at small furry rodents eating nuts. It's the song you sing when no music is playing, the girl with the braces and the most beautiful eyes in the world. Daily Comic makes babies scream and cry rapturous joy and old women swipe pruned hands into the air while proclaiming “Oh you!” with blushed cheeks. Actually, it's just a bunch of one panel cartoons that started as doodles in a mole skin sketch book and found their way into a computer, where various programs made them purdy like. As far as the humor goes, well...all one can say is that whenever our eyes are opened to the world around us, a sick smile is undoubtedly plastered about our collective lips.
