Shock Effect
Shock Effect is © John Lang and Ian Daffern
Everything changed with the arrival of the Others, deadly alien plants that overran the city of Arden. As government and military forces try to contain the threat, the inhabitants struggle to survive. Alice Holly is an eleven-year old girl who loves video-games, pop-stars, and just happens to be growing up during this alien invasion. Her mom Liza knows better than to trust the government. She's too tough to play the victim; she's locked-down their home for long-term survival. But when soldiers come to evacuate them, they must embark on a journey through the shattered city. Along the way they will uncover the truth behind the invasion - if it doesn't tear their family apart first. Shock and awe is just the beginning.

It's nice to see that we're still getting some positive comments on the comic, even long after our competition has ended. Thanks everybody!
Rest assured that both Ian and I are working on new projects to keep an eye out for ... feel free to check out our websites for further details!
Thanks again!
Cheers,
John
Amazing if not cliched story line. I'm a huge fan of the War of The World type plot, so this is a gem. You've kept it simple but at the same time I can seriously see myself getting hooked. Fantastic artwork and I really do hope that the Dad makes it back. Very, very good.
Classic feeling comic and a different take on War of the Worlds. Would love to see more.
Wow! Love the old-school layout and art. Well written and well conceived. This is some professional-ass ****! Give me MORE!
Hey Guys amazing comic, I hope the best for you and a new home for Shock effect. :D
Ian, John, if you saw our interview with lrsteiner, you know that I'm a fan of Shock Effect. You guys and Sarah have been great, and I hope the six of us can meet up at a con someday.
The same right back at you and Team Shock Effect, Ian. You guys were pros in your work and throughout the competition. We'll definitely keep you update, and please do the same. Our collective email is vicboone@gmail.com
Shock Effect is a quality comic.
I think you guys made a great comic. I do feel guilty about my victory displacing others... But everyone just had to go for it as best they could. Thanks for the courtesy call. :)
LOVE THE ALIEN!!

Sarsuran--welcome to Zuda! Glad to see that worked! Tell your friends and get them to vote by NOON tomorrow and we'll be back for more!
I was handed a card with the zuda website on it at the Con this past weekend and was asked to check out your comic. Thankyou so much - I whipped through what was here and I'm convinced I need to read more. You got my vote and I hope you update often!
Amazing stuff, Ian. You've got my vote!
Nice work! Art and writing on this are totally solid (which sounds like a backhanded compliment but it's not meant to be) and it's a very compelling read. Good luck!
Great work!! Can I keep reading on please....you better win!!
good luck ian, just voted
yours, pemo.
Hey everybody, thanks for the words--the rest of the convention was excellent, busy as only a room full of fifty-thousand fans could be.
Caanan--again great to see you man, and hopefully we'll be kicking in it in Toronto soon!
VickiVonDoom-- so glad you made it! No one works the streets harder than us. You know it.
ComicHero75-- we're on it man!
Hey guys, was nice to meet you today, however briefly! And Ian, nice job as emcee on the J Scott Campbell vs Ethan Van Sciver sketch duel. And nice plug to a captive room full of comic nuts. ;o)
Keep pimpin', boys. Keep pimpin'.
Much luck to the both of ya.
Nice work! Can't wait for more. Hope you guys win!
Day one of the Fan Expo went really well! we met some AMAZING people - thx for all of the support everyone!
Hey thanks to everyone who came to meet us at the FanExpo in Toronto! We're there all weekend and it is a Shock Effect fever!
Covertan--Hey hey I like how you think. We'll give you more. But how bad do you WANT it! Get your friends on board and make it happen!
Tyler James--yeah Quentin and Curtis may need to up their arsenal if they wanna survive. If only they had their APAC it had some nice guns on it. And what's up with those Lasertag guns anyway? John?
Kostap--Thanks for the props! We're gonna bring you the best in alien action if we make it to the top!
PeachesKawaii--first love your name. OMG. Secondly, everybody knows when it comes to comics that Pimpin' Ain't Easy. (pimpin ain't easy).
that's All!
See the rest of you at the show!
Wow, well done!
preeeeeeeetty pimpin!
Beautiful, beautiful artwork, and solid writing. Nice job, guys. Although I'm not sure those old school Lasertag guns are going to be enough to take out the massive alien blobs. : )
Great Job! I was looking for the next page too :-) Good luck in the competition!
Dear Zuda Competitors/Creators,
I recently started a Zuda fan blog, and I would love to interview all of this month’s creators. If you would be willing to answer 5-10 questions, to be posted on the Zudafan blog, please contact me at: zudafan@gmail.com.
Feel free to check out the blog: zudafan.blogspot.com
Thanks!
This comic deserves a great review from someone who knows what they are talking about ... anyway, there is another kind of review over at http://www.mpd57.blogspot.com
again, thanks for everyone who's checked us out so far. things are heating up!
Crackwalker-- wow, high praise indeed, much appreciated. Glad you dig the Y the Last Man vibe, it was definitely an inspiration. Brian K. Vaughn is one of my favourites now, although I think I'd put Ex Machina ahead as my top read.
Manekochan--what can I say, John's a drawing machine, and there's plenty more where that came from.
RKB-- ho man, I've been waiting for the big review to come in. Glad we exceeded your expectations! Particularly like how you picked up on what we were doing with the layouts, to make each page a cliffhanger, as well as all the backstory elements that have been woven in for future pages. And the title? It's inspired by the views of Naomi Klein in her book The Shock Doctrine, with a bit of the aliens of the game Mass Effect, as well as eleventh hour decisions. John and I are both huge gamers, so they were a decided influence on our choices for the story.
Wow - I'm intrigued! This is a great piece of work. I can't believe it's not an instant winner! Reminds me of Y the Last Man
Clean, beautiful art. ^^ I think my favorite panel is the one you used for your title pic.
RKB - Thank you for your considered and thorough review! I particularly appreciate that after reading through our comic carefully, you gave it a better rating than you expected. A lot of work and careful consideration went into the story and the artwork, through every panel, and I'm happy to see that it comes through under scrutiny. Thanks again!
Yeah I see some day of the triffids, maybe a little of the happening and starship troopers structure-wise as well. Not really my go to genre, but that said a very well done story.
**************************************************************
screen 1 good use of the sequential art, moving in on the girl. Normally I hate text box thought balloons, but here you managed to pull it off, great character insight (crank up a few high scores) and intro to the threat of the others, went very well with a well written synopsis.
************************************************************
screen 2 'that was three weeks ago' and we see a panel of destruction. the plant thing didn't look too scary to me (like a black mushroom cross-bread with an octopus), but it wasn't trying to eat me either.;) Loved the mother's cool under fire response to alice in it's clutches "it's past your bed time" starting off early on with a insight into mom's character, good call and well done. Panel 5 why didn't we see mom's face here, it just looked odd to me and messed up the impact of a good action scene. Maybe you didn't show her face as a lead in to panel 6 -which was a very well done panel- but if that was your reason, I think you made the wrong call on that. 'liked to get her hands dirty' great thought to end on. You also did a good job (better than good really) of ending every screen on a moment that would make the reader want to keep on reading. Wanting to find out what happens next from screen to screen is something not every Zuda comic does, but should at least try to.
screen 3 nice to see some of the moms backstory and the way there home life was going under siege. Very good panel layout and her dad being a secret tiger and on tour adds a great deal to the character, and adds the 'where's my daddy' sub-plot. Loved her look of fear at the sfx: thump- thump- thump! in the last panel
************************************************************
screen 4 the fun house mirror look of the two men was a nice touch. I also enjoyed the stand off between curtis and holly. The fact you didn't over use the text box thought balloon, but used the girl's thoughts to help tell the story and get the reader to turn the page -so to speak, was fine storytelling. I liked the art on this easy to follow and fit the story. Reminded me of the G.I.Joe comics from devil's due.
***************************************************************
screen 5 I enjoyed the shop talk about why are you here in the burbs, and checking out the various zones etc; Curtis gave a good rundown to the reader about what has been going down in this world and how TPTB are dealing with it. The out-fits and weird-ass guns they have remind me of laser-tag.;)
*************************************************************
screen 6 liked the mom had more good sense than the gung-ho guys around her. Liked the way the monster expanded. I also liked the red tint to panel 5 so as to cue panel 6 he's got his glasses on so he's ready to roll.
***********************************************************
screen 7 laser-tag flashback. Still a good action scne and the girl in her mothers arms. the last panel seemed like a throwback to mid-80's captain america art-wise.
***********************************************************
screen 8 so the monster kills a house and the mom skips out.
I get she left them behind (at least for now) because her daughter comes first. I like that the daughter wants to save them. Good panel layout of the men fighting in the background and a great cliff hanger to end on "how can we just leave them behind?"
*************************************************************
why the name shock effect?
*************************************************************
a whole lotta likes but not a whole lotta love. Nothing really grabbed me, but everything art/words/colors/letters were well done. i was going to give you 3/5 stars. but I re-read it a couple of times and realized if you won I would keep reading -this bumped you up to 4/5 stars and a fav. Not being my genre hurt you with me, and that's not your comic thats me.
Well done, I really liked this one a lot...
Wooo!! what an excellent voting party that was :) I will post pictures on the Shock Effect Facebook group tomorrow sometime!! Thanks to EVERYONE for coming and supporting Team Shock Effect :D Sara xoxox
I love it! But then... I have to.
Hey! Thanks everybody who has come on to Zuda here to make Shock Effect a continuing series. I'm looking to really knock this one outta the park... you won't believe what's coming... but you can only see it if you make us number one
Thanks to everyone who came out-great to see that kinda support.
Beckettt--Secret Tigers? Yeah that sounded a lot better when I wrote it when I saw it on the page! How do YOU come up with the name for a vaguely New Pornographers sort of band name. But I'm completely open for any suggestion for a new name for Liza's husband's altenraprog melodic rock outfit. ANY SUGGESTIONS? Best one will be the new name of the band!
Sweet work - great job. Good party too!
very nice job! can't wait to see more!
i think this comic gave me a boner.
i would like to give a shout out to beckettttt. in conclusion.
Love this comic. Really, really want to see where it goes.
Great premise for a story. I'm very interested to see how the humans live in this situation. More so than wanting to see details about the invasion. I've voted for you, so now I'm emotionally invested into this. Creepy, huh?
Very nice, cant wait to see the rest.
Great voting party!! Thanks for the invite - what a great comic you guys have got going here !!
Great hook and killer art - totally pro on both fronts. Can't wait for the rest. It's coming, right? Right?
Thanks again for all the positive feedback, everybody!

DShide - That's a huge compliment, dude! As far as the artwork, I don't like to over-render anything, as I feel it overpowers the linework, so the contrast is pretty subtle in the colour - I work to get most of the contrast coming from the balance the blacks in the original artwork. Glad you dig the comic :)
*****
trainedmonkey88 - I'm glad to hear you like the characterization - that's really what Ian and I were focusing on with this comic.

Don't forget that you can check out production artwork such as creature designs, as well as our new behind-the-scenes documentary on our production blog: shockeffect.blogspot.com
Good job.
One Word:
MILF
Nice! This was just what I was looking for today!
I haven't seen a new comic I've liked in 10 years. They're all great, and they're all boring. But Shock Effect is wonderful. It doesn't look like everything else, it doesn't read like everything else, it doesn't feel like everything else. Thanks and kudos to the creators.
Sweet comic! I want more... (though I'm worried I might get too hooked...)
