Rob, thanks for noticing that i wasn't in the ring the past few hours. i have a deadly fever, but that's no excuse. The conversations you are having with mpd57 and the others kick ass, so thanks for keeping the hottest spot on zuda alive while i'm in bed dying. (if i die you should all vote children of bighand, just out of respect for a dying man's wishes). You've proven tonight, that the popularity of my talkback continues without me. Allow me to chime in for a few minutes, respond to some of this activity here...
...*trolling, i might be (in fact yes, i suspect) that i am mentally ill(undiagnosed tho!), but i am right about columbus, ill or not. (thanks mpd57 for asking the question to trolling, "is rudy right?") also, i'm not sure why you think i harm animals. i have salted a slug before, an action that diminished my soul and that i have never repeated. I've also stomped a twitching mouse to death whose brains were leaking on the concrete. Euthenasia. But that action deminished me too, and i still regret it. I'm a biophile, trolling, which means i respect living things and go out of my way not to kill them. I believe animals have souls. Also, I don't know how to prove to you that Sheilah is not one of my female multiple personalities, but here is a picture of us together if it helps - http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j308/klumpiesrule/s42221ca102882_2.jpg
*Dshide, the only fact i invented is the meeting between Leonardo Davinci and Christopher Columbus, but they both existed in the same city during the same period of time, so who knows. The facts on Columbus's genocide of the Arawaks, and his invention of the transatlantic slave trade, are disturbing, but true.
* Rob berry, i agree with you about everything you've said about my talkbacks, about the entertainment of this months competition and the standard it sets for the future of zuda, and the potential it has for the daily viability of drawing people back to the site, everything. People should stay their vote here, CHOB isn't defeated yet, and this is the month that the tenth ranked comic out the gates on may fifth, rose to fifth, and then to first! I didn't realize i came across as not supporting the other contenders. The only reason i haven't left critiques or praises of their work is that my overself has not allowed me to read their comics, and i probably won't until the last days of the competition. I just can't bring myself to do it. Maybe i don't want to express anything negative if i feel like a comic is worse than mine but higher in the ranks, or maybe i don't want to get jealous and feel defeated if i feel they are superior. Maybe my self confidence is in tact this way. But I'm a contender, and thats the way i'm doing it. I'll give proper support or critique when the appropriate time comes for me to do it - after may 30th.
I'll admit, i did cheat to read colonel mctagart because i was a huge fan of crocodile man.
*mpd57, thanks for gracing my page with your voice. i like the new picture on your zuda icon.

Wow.
This is fun.
And Rudy seems to be able to take time off now that I'm all over his talkback.
I'm surprised to find myself addressing the two of you at the same time but here goes;
mpd57 and DShide,
Seems you're both voting for the same comic this month and everything I said in my earlier posting about voting one's conscience doesn't allow me to sway you from that. So here's a few little hypotheticals about how Web 2.0 (I'm really just trying to link to a point here) might apply to the readers' experience of comics on Zuda.
People visit comics daily on the web and not weekly like in comicshops. Zuda is building good material here, but it's years down the road that will give us enough exciting new features delivered daily to fit into the consumption rate that people have for web media.
Talkbacks and blogs answer some of that reader interest for each one of these comics singularly (after all, mpd, they're only allowed eight pages no matter how fast they work) and for Zuda's interests as a whole.
As I write this CHILDREN OF BIGHAND has over ten-thousand views while the first place comic (sorry, Canaan, just a example) has less than half that.
Some people are going to say that views are frivolous and insignificant as a barometer of genuine reader interest. Some people will say that Rudy himself is responsible for most of those views with his constant chatter and that I, and the two of you, have only added to that.
You have, you know. As Mike put it earlier, this is definitely the most interesting talkback section of the month and that's certainly contributing to these enormous views.
But isn't that the point? Don't we want to bring eyes on the site and give them something to talk about that will bring them, and their friends, back here?
CHILDREN OF BIGHAND is a good comic and I don't hear either of you, mpd or Dshide, disclaiming that. But it's also a comic which has engendered many good discussions about the comics offered on Zuda, made us all more involved than we'd be if this was sitting on a shelf somewhere in a comicshop.
Isn't that a factor that makes the Zuda experience more engaging for most of us regulars day after day?
Don't get me wrong, I'm with you, MIke. I think the work should talk for itself.
Rudy's does talk for itself. You recognized that off his earlier stuff and, if you don't like what he's done here in BIGHANDS then I definitely understand that.
But I think the reason we return to these talkbacks is that there's some interesting stuff going on here and we have Rudy to thank for that. Has any other work posed some of those same questions?
When you both, as regular Zudites, log on to this site daily, a site that really only makes major changes monthly, where's the first thing you go to?
Message boards?
Zuda blog?
Talkback of the current winner?
Here?
I'm not sensationalist. I don't believe that being topical is something to be lauded in the arts.
But I'm trying to decide what other comics offered this month hold the same potential for surprises should they continue here on Zuda.
Good stuff, sure. But what of it surprises? What of it brings you back daily?
-Rob

Mike, mpd, you're spot on, straight up hilarious. I wonder how many people on this site do the research you do, man, and I know ('cause I pay attention to these kind of things) that voting conscience versus voting style is an important part of your way of looking at things.
Myspace and facebook and a lot of other external forces are beginning to have a major play here at Zuda. The contest is entirely different now then it was in it's first few months and its going to be interesting to see how that effects the Readers' Choice Showdown for July. New traffic has a tremendous qualifier in Zuda voting (hell, everyone here is new if you get right down to it) and there's been some obvious stagnation in the ranks as a we notice the top three in every months' contest never really falling out of the race.
Zudites are skiddish.
Nobody wants to waste a vote on some comic lower than third place and the ability to change that vote at the last minute, a factor that should give us all a lot more freedom, has made Zudites careful about when and where to spend their opinions.
There's two weeks left on the contest. I've been watching these things for awhile now, and it occurs to me that this is the best time for Zudites to get liberal and proactive with their voting power.
The early contacts, the myspace and facebook networking important to this sites continued success, is in. This is a good time to shake up the ranks.
A vote this week or next will help people rethink their options. I believe, I really do believe this, that the first week is about the mechanism of external contacts for competitors, but the second and third week gives regular readers a chance to speak their minds. Any comics making a steady and trackable rise in these two weeks is, to my mind, a purer reflection of the regular readership. When that push comes at the end, that last week in which return viewers have the opportunity to change their votes in favor of the comics they feel have the best chance, they'll be looking at the rankings from these two mid-month weeks.
I can't imagine what you're voting for this month, Mike, and it may be none of my business. But if you, like other Zudites out there, believe that this comic has some legs, if you believe that seeing it regularly updated could provide some fun surprises to the Zuda site, if you believe that idiosyncratic, quirky and unusual humor has a place here that it can't find in the print world and that the purveyors of it deserve some kind of a paycheck, then I encourage you and others like you to vote for CHILDREN OF BIGHAND and to vote for it this week.
Let me broaden that, since Rudy has been somewhat misunderstood for seeming to not be supportive of other comics and only furthering his own agenda.
For those Zudites who really wish to vote your heart and not just choose one of the "big three" this week is the time. Movement in the ranks this week is very, very conclusive and now should be the time to switch votes toward the underdogs, toward the comics you personally love. Zuda is a new very, very new idea and voter response is reflexive. People, new-comers to the site, will naturally gravitate to the top three comics in the competition or the one they've been asked to visit from their myspace friend and make a judgement on that. It's sad, but very few of the mid-month voters are going to visit every comic on the site.
Now is the time to lend your support and to lobby for the comics that didn't get the attention the richly deserved in the contest's first week. For regular readers, now is the time to fight that wave of web advertising you've been fearing damages the voting process. Now is the time to give some comic, and that comic's creative team, a badly needed shot in the arm. Make a comic rise from 7 to 4 and see what people say about it. See what the creator does to keep it there. Now is the time for Liberal vote-casting to offset the Conservative 1st and 4th weeks in which everyone wants to back the winner.
There are 26 days of voting in May's contest, just short of four weeks to decide. Are the regular readers, the mainline Zudites, prepared to let the first seven days of aggressive advertising determine the course of the comics they want to see continued here? Are we willing to let one-time users ("one-hitters" who vote and move on) decide which three of these ten really good comics deserve a chance?
It's week two and a lot of those "one-hitters" are gone. C'mon, Zudites, now the time. Vote your conscience and vote it often. Make May the most dynamic month yet for voter return and maybe, just maybe, people won't know which "sure win" to back in week four. Maybe, maybe voting your conscience then might actually catch on.
Oh, yeah...
and vote for CHILDREN OF BIGHAND!

Rudy was on my radar before Zuda. I was looking at his New World Order/Rudy vs Columbus thang and when I intuitively bookmarked that site (which looks like it's down now), I lumped him in with designers and creatives ie; serious artists rather than comic strip small pressers and wannabees. I thought he was that good. A serious voice. Someone to be reckoned with. Then came GBSoD. Similar vein. Political. Daring. Adult. Similar commitment to great design and astonishing (TM) ideas. Compared to just that small body of work CofBH is junvenille nonsense. If it were juvenille nonsense on it's own, without my knowledge of what work has been done previously, well then, who knows? Maybe it it would have got my vote. Remember it's all the other regular users who've been telling me I should be looking at a body of work rather than just the strip in front of me! That's a double edged sword. A plus or a minus! What's that old quote about better to be silent and let everyone think you're a fool rather than open your mouth and prove it beyond a doubt. Wait, wait, I'm not calling anyone a fool here - I'm just saying that the 'noise' revealed on the talkback and messageboard might not necessarily garner you any votes, it might in fact lose you votes. People are not voting based on how often you 'speak' (intelligently or otherwise) or how often you ask for a vote. Have you ever been persistently begged on the street. Your sympathy and good will quickly disappears! Anyway, this strip is not demonstrating the Rudy I like so I can afford to wait until he comes up with the real deal I know he's capable of. I like Jack Kirby but it doesn't mean I'm going to run out and buy old issues of Captain Victory! And Rob, I'm not arguing at all against the nature of the talkback itself - interactivity is crucial, but this is no more interactivity than scribbling on cardboard with crayons is graphic design! Next you'll be telling me marketing has something to do with adding myspace friends! My last word is that Rudy has a distinct voice and viewpoint, but this strip does not describe it very well. I'd like to say I wouldn't be sorry if it won, but I think I would be, as it might send him the wrong message. That's only my view of course and I may very well be wrong. It has happened many many ... zzzzz! Retirement homeszzzzzz vending machineszzzzzzz vote bighandzzzzzz!

Thanks, Rudy. I appreciate the praise and all that, but there's no need. Comment threads like this are intended for fans, like myself, to lend artists their support and maybe give new readers a different way of thinking about the comics and their merits. I'm more than happy to lend a few choice adjectives for that purpose when I can.
Tell your Mom and Sis that, no, I don't secretly work for Zuda but that I simply try to support it as a fan also (although, if they've got any positions opening up for "god of Zuda," it seems mpd and I both have resumes and referrals).
mpd, Mike, I understand about your Golden Rule, man. You've been pretty clear on that point for awhile and it's definitely valid. There's a lot of good reasons why comics, being made of an unique language, should speak for themselves. I don't necessarily believe it to be the truth with webcomics however.
Webcomics are largely driven by the web 2.0 model of fan interaction in the same way that print comics are by formatting, print-size and four-color cover designs to entice buyers to pick it up off the shelf. Virtually all the webcomics running these days use this kind of a talkback model in some form or another. I'm with you. I'm old (old enough to remember comicbooks in vending machines in fact) and this kind of format for interaction was pretty unsettling to me at first and seemed a bit amateurish. But it's simply a different method of distribution now with a different set of norms.
You and I will probably argue on that some more, but let me go back to the original question, Mike;
Tell me this [comic] isn't crazy, good, wonderful fun that rarely sees the light of day in print comics anymore.

I think that what brought me over wasn't just Rudy's entrepreneurial hukstering but the fact the comic itself evidences the same renegade charm. CHILDREN OF BIGHAND has a really unique voice that, while it does take a little getting used to, has all of the same frenetic sense of humor as Rudy's posts.
Anybody know Matt Feazle of CYNICALMAN?
Rudy drawing style is nothing like that. That's not what I'm suggesting so, please, those of you who take these kind of critiques to literally, put the brick-bats down for a minute.
(I swear that I'm never going to escape the crap I got for "daring to compare STARFISH to SUPERMAN".)
Matt Feazle's work has this really wonderful charm in it's simplicity whereby the subtlety of his humor is enhanced by the sparity of the normal comicbook flourishes we see in his contemporaries. I think Rudy's drawing style does really perfectly capture the world he's trying to present us. More over, I think his sense of humor about that world, just as we see in his posts, is really going to be wildly fun to follow.
There's other good stuff to be seen on Zuda this month, lots of it, but most of them have a pretty clear trajectory. Rudy offers us a scud missile of laughs and I've no idea where it's going to land.
So here's a direct appeal to mpd;
Mike, your fascination and love of the Golden Age is well-established. Almost as much as your contempt for predictability and overt stylization in previous contestants. Tell me this comic doesn't have more of the elusive wit and joyful presentation that you love in guys like Fletcher Hanks.
Tell me that this isn't crazy, good, wonderful fun that rarely see the light of day in print comics anymore.

yo infernalbbg! thank you for enjoying it, yes i definately had to make a choice between starting the comic medias res - if i'd gone that route i'd probably have jumped straight into a fight scene between the kids and their dadaa, showcasing their unique martial skills. but i chose to tell the story in order for clarity's sake (instead of jumping back from an action scene, or to explain origins through expository dialogue), and to begin with the eight page prologue to leave no question about why the kids were unproportional, and because i think their origin story (being human/giant ape hybrids) is really important. their dad is the darth vader of this story, and this story is very much a tragedy. It'll be rediculous and sometimes funny, that's just part of the package when I'm doing the writing, but plan to make you cry tears also, and the best stories also do that to their audiences. If you really want to know what to expect as the direction of the story goes, i have a pretty detailed direction of the plot explained in the fuller synopsis. For anybody interested in plot spoilers (not the big ones tho, not the super secret really bizarre plot spoilers!) who might be new to ZUDA, click on the plus symbol by the word SYNOPSIS. Its on the column to the right of the comic viewer up there, somewhere underneath the green numbered rank of my comic. Its got some heavy info on the direction of the story. And infernalbbg, i am here to listen to your critiques of the artwork, i pay attention to all of them and i take it all in. No need for apologies, thank you for the feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed the read, and please vote for my comic.

restyourpads,
its an effect i picked up from comics artists like leinil yu (see superman birthright for examples) or any artist ever who drew batman with his mask on sans pupils. BigHead and Cutie Pie look more pissed and determined with no pupils in this particular shot maybe. it isn't that they have cataracts or no pupils or that they are blind or something, they are just drawn that way for effect on page ocho. If you'd like too see what they look like with pupils, you should vote for the comic to continue on zuda for a whole year!

Why don't BH & Cutie Pie have pupils?

I think the artwork is interesting, It's stylized in a fashion that kind of appeals to me. I think I'd like to see it even slightly more so, and some limited color with perhaps texture too could help that. But you're not here for advice on how to draw your pictures, I'm just contemplating out loud, excuse me.

I know it's gotta be bloody difficult to give people an in-road to a comic in an extremely limited number of pages, but I don't feel like I've got much of grasp on the direction the actual story will take from what I've seen here. I usually like things to jump into the beans of the action, but without knowledge of your unique (and interesting) back-story that might not work too well either. I'm just full of constructive criticism but no suggestions today. Thanks for the read, I did enjoy it. And good luck in the comp.

EMUS14, for your files - i was referring to the love scene in Deliverance where a man is forced to squeel like a pig by evil rapists. i haven't seen it either but it is notorious.

Rudis,
Deliverance a love story??? Maybe Clerks2 and the tv show Scrubs (man-love), but I don't know about Deliverance (haven't seen it though, admittedly).

Wow, I'm being talked about a little.... I guess I will have to start logging out each time so that Rudy doesn't use mine again.
Back to the comic, I love that Rudy throws a couple political things in there... No matter what side you are on that gets your interest and attention.

RKB, let me thank you for your praises, challenge your assertions, and tackle your six inches of questions...
*I DO think Children of BIGhand will win the competition with your vote, so please. Also, I gave away less than a third of the entire story. its meant to be a trilogy, three seasons, and the first season with all its tragedy doesn't end the story, but it does mark a turning point to shoot it into act two. And i did not give away the climax. The synopsis is the equivalent of a trailer to me, so I chose to give plenty of details without revealing major shocking endings in season one, plus i never revealed whether or not the army actually will detonate Bighand's nuclear brain implant.
*Thank you for the stars, part of the plan with not so many words was to keep you clicking to the next page. An easy read, not too many words, two panels per screen, end on a splash that'll make you want more, to click for that ninth page, and i think Mega-ape was cool enough for the final splash page, hopefully driving readers crazy for the next installment.
*My handling of the zuda format is now being called the "Rudy Technique" or sometimes, the "Rudy Maneuver."
*I will keep flirting with Sheilah, i've been with her for years, she is bound to surrender those smoochable lips eventually. As for W-Son of Dracula Prima nocta plot point - I will fully explain to you, but maybe in the next post, this one will be 12 inches long if i do it here.
*Oh, he had to be killing in iraq. or afghanistan. it places this comic firmly in our world and our history, and the page was an splash of allegory. Did anybody notice that Bighand took advantage of the kill order, and exhibited resistance to slavery by smashing his army handler with his fist? check it out, page seven.
*Beastiality is not even illegal at all in Oklahoma, where i write this comic from, and hybrids are a major part of our population.
*I can't speak for monkey puppet, but BH's wife is considered a milf by most simians, in fact her first name is MILFA. and Bighand learned his lesson from his first three marriages. no more swinging. Plus, he deeply loves Milfa.
*Voltron is a comparison made by one of the first haters on this talkback ( four eyed manwhich), but i like it and agree with it. Voltron was awesome and i watched it all the time as a kid (Thundercats was better tho! Plus, they are human/cat alien hybrids - awesome.).
*Its clear that the masses have spoken, and the future of Children of Bighand is in color, but i can assure you - it was designed intentionally for black and white, and the artwork is the OG intended design. Not only do i love black and white comics as much as color comics, but i also did black and white as a strategy to get into the competition. I noticed there was about one black and white comic in every competition representing. i wanted to represent for my month, plus i figured there were far less black and white pitches to compete against for the black and white spot. And I wanted my comic to stand out. in a color world, black and white is different. and yes, i do feel like the black and white pays homage to classic monster films like king kong and frankenstein. its a subtle nod, but thank you for noticing it. look at panel two on page seven, that image of Bighand i was extra careful with, i think it looks like the classic iconic giant monster ape, and setting him in iraq with army helmet and the caption - "they turned him into a monster" is probably my favourite beat from my own comic.
I'm glad you dig the political allegory.
*It was fun wasn't it, with or without the subtle (or blatant) social commentary. Its also fun to vote for it. think about it and let me know.

BH, CUTIE PIE, and CANKLES are the hybrid children of a fifty-foot tall ape named BIGHAND and their human mother. BH has a very big head and a huge brain. Cutie Pie, a female, has gigantic arms and hands, and Cankles has giant legs and feet. When they stack up, they become a mega ape that rivals the size of their father - who they believed was killed by the army when they were only babies. Once they learn that he is a living captive of the army, who the army has programmed to be used as a remote controlled, biological weapon - they set out on a quest to free their father from his enslavers. The army programs Bighand to terminate his own children, and a monster fight between Bighand and his children ensues, showcasing the trio's unique fighting style and abilities. Once his children turn Bighand to disobey his army controllers, the army sends another giant monster to retrieve Bighand and to terminate his children. But even if Bighand and his children survive a fight with the bounty hunter monster, even if Bighand rampages toward military headqarters and his handlers, there is always that nuclear implant in Bighand's brain that the army is more than willing to detonate if they lose control of their ultimate weapon. If the children of Bighand are captured, do they have the willpower to resist torture & trauma based mind control? Or will they walk the path of their father as slaves and biological, remote controlled weapons of war?
