Following the death of his wife, Colonel Edwin MacTagart and his trusty companion, February, go on safari in the deepest jungles of a terribly uncivilized continent. They search for the beast known by the local natives as the "Serrapoh". Most say the Serrapoh is a mythical creature concocted by the unenlightened tribes people. Colonel MacTagart, on the other hand, swears the Serrapoh is real and has made a deal with a publisher to print his exploits once he returns.

do you read the dictionary a lot or do you know that from experience? :)
the correct term for a male prostitute is HUSTITUTE. for your files.
there are probably a few kids books about male prostitutes. ;)
Male prostitute? In a kid's book?
Thanks Steve and best of luck. :)
You need to ask steve for some spoilers, this is not a kid's book!!!!
SHEEISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought this was a weak story, but it seems Mr. Steiner has a grand following. Good for a kid's book or sunday comic strip.
thanks RKB - sent your sketch out yesterday. if you'd like a sneak peak though i posted it on my blog www.steve-steiner.blogspot.com
Glad I'm at least impressing you sis. As for how Feb and the Colonel met...
Hmmm... Well after his wife died, the Colonel needed a little companionship. February was a male prostitute at the time and one night the Colonel got a little too drunk... one thing led to another... and now they're in the jungle together
Yeah, how did February get mixed up with Colonel M?
I would like to point out that not only is Steve to be the first Zuda creator with two selected entries, but he did it in an incredibly short time frame. Feb. to May. Plus, he's already working on his 3rd entry. I mean come on! And he does all the work himself. How impressive is that?
You have no idea how hard this guy works.
not a text box in sight it's all in the characters words, a font that is easy to read, a main character CM you see a lot of sides to, HOT DAMN!!!
The more a character talks in a comic the more you can learn about them, and plus you can have (and do) the whole unreliable narrator element with the Colonel. A reader asks so how much of what he says is true and how much is BS, it pumps up my interest in your story. Of course the art is great reminds me of Sergio on Groo really very good man. Also the painted backgrounds was a nice touch that really made the art/story stand out. Nice joke's from CM, and the vegie-lizard -I laughed a comedy (that's more than a comedy) can get no higher praise than that. I know Feb. can speak but I kind of like the fact he doesn't get a word in edge-wise here. Great side-kick you wonder how he got mixed up with CM in the first place.

I know from that e-mail I got from you that there are/ can be darker elements in your story, but unless someone knew your work on croc-man they might not get there was more serious twists and turns ahead in these 8 screens for a darker side to the story, that's my only real crit more foreshadowing about things ahead, and other layers to the story.
finally the first Zuda creator to get 2 comics in the contest BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!!!, especially considering the masses who have yet to get 1 comic in.
Your comic's a fav of mine and you got the stars!!!!!
I love the art. it reminds me of Quentin Blake. I liked Crocodile Man and I like this too. Good Luck.
yeah, i'm scrambling for every phone number of every person i've ever known in my life. the grand number adds up to like fifty people.
i wish i had more family!
Hey Steve
Congrats on the bump!
And thanks for the MM homage on your cool site.
Hang in there Steve. I just voted for ay. Just put 1.5 million in the campaign fund.....
DAD
yay up to ninth.
Allow me to extend the invitation to all. All are welcome, all are appreciated, whether fans of tween mags or not. The regulars at Zuda will appreciate all who come here, well maybe not all, but most. If you you like tween mags or Steve or anything else we can only benefit from your addition. So come one come all and remember Vote for Steve.
By the by Steve I don't care what Middle Aged Monsters goes up against, you have my vote. Even if the competition is Erebus Effect and Robodeath (my only permanent votes thus far), I will support MAM. Till death if I have to I love MAM and you deserve it.
I think I've out grown tween magazines. I'm glad you think it's cool I'm here, DShide. I seriously keep waiting for someone to say "Hey! What are you doing here?! Go play in your own sandbox, you freak jeweler!"
MPD57: Oh now I see the wink, I really wish we had some emoticons here. Zuda? I already asked I know but do we see the point?
There is a synopsis? Oh yeah there it is right up at the top. I myself never read the things unless the comic was entirely unclear. You've never had that problem with me.
MPD57: It's not like that man I have a woman. I'm just interested that his sister likes comics and is here with us all. I wish my own sister liked comics but she is too interested in silly tween magazines. Although she is only ten so maybe there is still hope. I hope your comment was a joke by the by, if not sorry for sounding creepy.
Egad!
top stuff. I like some of the others this month but you get my vote as there is no way that this should be in last. Maybe a bit wordy on page 3 but apart from that minor point i thought it was ace. Looks really unique in a good way.
Top stuff 5/5
Glad you commented Mike and, again, I really appreciate you taking the time to look at my comics.
I've gotten a few comments saying people didn't like me at first but I'm starting to wear on them!
I well say about the synopsis though... I did that on purpose. I didn't want to use it as a crutch. I tried to use it more on Croc Man to make it seem like there were actual stories and not just gags the whole time. But I realized that I think most people don't care as much about the synopsis and the longer it is the less likely they'll read it. Maybe I'm wrong though. Any thoughts?
I like your story and I wish the best!Never give up!Fight till the end!
Now, last but most definitely not least, Colonel MacTagart! I think I've said most of what I need to say about this in personal emails to Steve. He's a nice guy! I hated Croc-man, although there was something nagging me about the art. It was good. It's even better here and the more I look at it the more I like it. Quite a progression, yet still keeping the essential humour in the style. Trouble is the humour is all in the art and very little in the writing. I kind of feel I'm being taken in the right direction, but there seems to be little in the way of resolution. It may be too subtle for me, but I really don't get the joke. Art's great. Characters are inherently funny, but what is the joke? Well, he has been in this competition twice now, so he must be doing something right. Now take a look at his next project if you can – just ask him nicely – Middle Aged Monster. This for me is where he hits the proverbial on the head. It's funny. Its a winner! If it can't get into the competition again for whatever reason it should be declared the next instant winner. It's that good! Congratulations Steve, third time lucky (with me anyway)! PS you missed a trick with the synopsis - as that explanation of the strip is completely redundant!
"Hey Steve where is your sister on here? I see her in the message boards but haven't seen her here on the main site."
-
I've read some scary things on this site but that has to be the scariest ;-)
I really see what you're going for here, and I like it. The style and tone of Colonel McTaggart make me think it should be sandwiched between episodes of Aesop and Son and Fractured Fairy Tales on old Bullwinkle or Tennessee Tuxedo cartoons. Great stuff! I voted for Crocodile Man in February, so I'm already a fan of your work, and the enhanced, combined art styles you used with the Colonel really show off your talent. This strip deserves much better than 10th place. Best of luck to you.
Don't worry, I'm around. ;)
Hey Steve where is your sister on here? I see her in the message boards but haven't seen her here on the main site.
Steve,
I think you did a wonderful job. I love the artwork and the cartoon was great. Carol
I can't believe this is in last. its a travesty.
You SHOULD be getting votes based simply on the fact that you're the very first PRO to resubmit, an amazing feat.
Steve - i wasn't spamming; just having fun in the spirit of friendly competition. Feel free to come by my thread and do the same. If we aren't having fun while doing this, then what's the point? Sorry if I made you angry
Wow, the look of this thing is just gorgeous. I'm afraid I have to agree with some of the others that the script is a little flat. Still, it's one of my favorites this round. Keep at it!
thnaks guys... yeah chachi - the technique something i never really tried before so i'm seeing the flaws too. it was a lot of fun though! really flabergasted croc man seems more popular than Colonel M!
I've got Joe comics on my list for the invitational. though i'm still waiting to send it in so I can see which of my favorite comics this round fail to make it.
Hey Steve, I hope you can get over that hump to number 1 too! :o)
I'm honestly dumbfounded at your initial ranking. I'm sure it will soar!
Steve, sorry to see you ranked where you are. I love the look of the backgrounds, but I'm not crazy about the overall finished product. Maybe there wasn't enough payoff for me humor-wise. I adored Crocodile Man, and if it were Croc competing this month, you'd definitely have my vote. I did put Crocodile Man on my list for the Invitational -- can you imagine if you get in? That'd be three Zuda contests in six months! Congrats to you, Steve, and best of luck.
-Chachi
i'm in last place and I get spammed. ouch.
Hey, colonels -
After the first ranking, ACTION, OHIO is in first place! But this contest isn't over and we're going to have to fight to stay there... so please register, favorite and vote for us all throughout May.

IT'S FREE! If it helps me get votes - great. But no need to even vote for me.
I have more freebies planned.
I enjoyed the artwork and style of the comic. The textures kept me looking at the pages for a while. The story was a little weak, and the word balloons/font isn't doing it for me. Pretty cool over all though!
Pretty, but kind of boring.
A nice story. I feel like I know the Colonel because he seems to be based on the traditional English hunter. I like your style, it's a fun style that seems like it would fit in Mad Magazine (yes, that's a compliment) especially because of the humor you have.
Nice artwork! Very storybook like, but I'm more of a fan of Croc-man!
the silence would be deafening!
Actually February pre-dates croc man. If you check out my blog
http://www.steve-steiner.blogspot.com/
i put up some really old colonel m. from 2000. You, the reader, used to be the Colonel's companion. So he'd pretty much just "talk" to you. After a while I realized that was kind of lame so I made up the silent character for him to interact with. February will talk though when you make him made or insult the royal navy.
First Impressions: I really like the look, as stated before. Pretty, relatively realist backgrounds that near perfectly offset the cartoon figures.
February is analogous with Croc-man, but this works better because Croc-man was basically a straight man to no one. I can't even remember any of the supporting cast from your last comic, but here you've got the Colonel running his yap.
All in all I think this is much more successful and since the character art is so similar you can get away with introducing Croc-man later. Croc-man vs. February could be a legendary showdown come to think of it. Who would out-silence who?
I like the art style. Reminds me of that George Lucas produced animation film (title escapes me). The thing that I find most distracting is the italic font for the dialogue. As if the characters are over emphasizing everything which is annoying to read and the the font chosen is less ideal. Maybe a traditional hand written font would do.
Hi Steve
Pod from Mean Model, here. Thanks for the visit and the good words. I, too, dig the painting with the cartoons. Great combo. What kind of accent would the Colonel have if this went to animation? I'm just sorry everyone laughed at and not with Crocodile Man.
The artwork is really great but, the story's a little simple. It feels like it's be a great children's book.
Good to see Mister Steiner back for a new go-round! This is funny stuff. Great dialogue from the Colonel and fabulous backgrounds. It's a cool contrast with the cartoony figures. I actually liked the fact that February was so inexpressive even in his facial expressions. For me that added to the dry humor. Good luck!
Congrats on reentry. I do like it better than Croc but man you do have a thing for silent characters and crocs. :)
rkb - if you'd like a sketch in lieu of a puppy i'm happy to send you out one. If you, or anyone else would like one feel free to send me a mailing address to steve_steiner@hotmail.com.
i promise you won't end up on any deviant mailing lists!
and i think you've taken too many kickballs to the head there Stoller!
