After almost drowning while fishing with her grandfather off the coast of North Carolina, thirteen year old Novie Paulec is thrust into extraordinary circumstance. She is saved by uncovering a jet pack at the bottom of the ocean, which coincidentally houses the power of a star. Realizing her newfound abilities and given a second chance at life, she embarks on a mission to right the wrongs present in the world around her. Adopting the media nickname "Starfish" and literally flying in the face of authority, Novie soon experiences resistance from the powers-that-be, both on the earthly plane and the cosmic one. As a dark energy encroaches on the universe, agents are unleashed to influence and eat away at the many aspects of reality. Among them Cataclyst, a being who controls the elements causing disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes; Metastasis, a cancerous monster who manipulates disease and decay; and Zeitgeist, a spirit able to incite the darkest corners of human emotion on a mass scale. As Novie combats each menace, she unlocks the secret origins of the evil threatening to unravel existence and its connection to her jet pack and the power she wields. Torn between her newly acquired responsibility and the desire to return to the normal life she once knew, Novie flies head on into a battle that just may hold the very fabric of the cosmos in the balance.

This is a really great comic. I Love how the origin is told.
Wow. I'm having a reading blitz today, and I'm going through every comic on Zuda. I liked a lot, but this is the only one worthy of...A COMMENT!!! Well done. I hope you make it to the Invitationals!
I seem to be running just a few screens behind, RKB.
STARFISH belongs in the top ten for a "reader's choice showdown" in July.
Anyone else think so?
-Rob
Of course this comic made my top 10 list to comeback for the Zuda invite contest.
Anyone looking for more Starfish need look no further than http://www.amalgamatedartists.com/. The story continues...
I still say go to Image, I'd buy it to support you. I hope you get a good deal. I know I didn't like the concept myself but there is a whole mess of people out there who love it or would if they read it. I just want to see you get something you love out to the public. And remember if a star fish loses an arm another grows in its place. Never give up never say die. Don't let Starfish sit on the sidelines to long. You now have a fan base use em.
Yes, please let us know where we can expect to find these ongoing adventures of Starfish the second you've got it sorted out. Definitely something for me to add to my collection of regularly visited websites.
Glad to hear your going to keep on with starfish, and of course best of luck with the comic.
Congratulations, Miguel. STARFISH grabbed strong attention and shows great promise for future development in many venues. I'll be happy to support it wherever it lands!
-Rob
Thanks so much to everyone for all the kind words and support... it's got me pretty motivated to develop this comic further... It's all been a great experience and you all WILL see more of Starfish soon!
I look forward to seeing this in print. Of all the entrants thus far, I believe this has the greatest chance of being picked up and being successful as an ongoing.
Don't think of the outcome of the competition as a loss. Think of it as establishment of a fanbase for your ongoing print series from Image or Darkhorse or whoever you get to pick Starfish up.
Miguel, I hope you'll still keep your starfish blog up to let the fans know what ever coming next for the series.
Anyway, congratulations on doing as well as you did, and good luck for Starfish's future!
We put up a good fight, Miguel!
I don't have to read anymore--a good comic book.
I NNEEEEEEEEEED MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!!!!!!
this is pretty sweeeeeet, i would for sure read this for ever, and i wanna know what's gonna happen!!!!!!!!
I have to say this comic is my favorite. Just looking through all of them, every single one seems to have one (or more) flaw that detracts from the rest of the awesomeness.
Starfish doesn't have that, and it has this carefree sense about it that makes it pure fun to read.
Isn't that why we read them in the first place?
Top notch.
awwwww Kaitlyn, you ARE Starfish!
coolest comic in the bunch. it has sweet graphics, a really awesome storyline, and it has so much promise in its future. if you check out the blog he has posted, it looks like starfish will have us on the edge of our seats, so you can see the greatness in store for us if it wins!!! vote, favorite and view!
Superberns: I agree with the god-like powers as a negative thing, but how could you not like the art?
artwise, not a fan. storywise, it is not something you are really looking forward to. superpowers, stopping war, returning a soldier to his family. it's neither moving the story forward or showing the bigger picture to want to learn more about this thirteen year old traipsing with rockets that give her power. i feel it would work better, if she was a little bit humanized rather than focusing all on her god-like abilities.
There are some great comics up this month, but I believe this one is my favorite. In terms of story, there is a lot of strength here with promise of some cool things to come.
War is a touchy subject these days, but you've handled it well - taking a stance without being preachy. It's interesting to see some real world issues being taken on, and from your synopsis, it sounds like there will also be some super-powered baddies as well.
As for the art - nice job. There is a great flow to these panels as well as a dynamic energy. It's great seeing the girl smash the jets with ease. This one gets my vote!
In other words: vote for Starfish.
commin at you like a barracuda ,!!here at zuda !So sit back and grab a can a tuna. This is it ya'll we gots alot invested in dis strip so lets make it happen foo's Hit it! I gots flava
I gots notes what the hell I needs now is the G-- D--- votes!Starfish has the pack I gots the vibe just punch up dem keys its time to subscribe
Up at the blog Starfishlighthouse.blogspot.com, is yet another Starfish baddie. Every hero needs a doppelganger!
Hey Thanks, John!!! I have to tell you all, whatever happens this month, I'm thrilled to no end about the votes of confidence I'm getting from both longtime posters and professionals. It really is motivating.
I really liked 3 entries this month: Joe, Reno and Starfish. I'll probably end up voting for Starfish because it's got a different vibe. All the other entries had good points but they didn't strike me as material I'd want to read for a year.
If S/S doesn't win, this gets my vote for cutest and best concept. It's not a perfect entry, but it has a lot of movement and action.
Ah, Doctor! Now who's logic is coldly impressive, hmmn?
Remember, Zudites, a vote for STARFISH is a vote recognizing the evil and oppressive quality of my posts. That should be recommendation enough for a number of you!
-Rob
What was that, group of zudites asking me a question? Oh, you've already voted for Starfish, and want to do more to help us prove Robbery's logic's evilness in addition to its coldness? No problem! Add Starfish to your favorites, as voting does not automatically do that. You already added it to your favorites? My how helpful you lot are. Well, let me tell you that in addition to Votes and Favorites, the score of an entrant is also determined by post count and view count- so re-read starfish a few times, and come post something new you discovered about it here each time! And see that button below "One of my Favorites" that says "Send to a friend"? That button there will send it, to one of your friends! Isn't technology grand? And by sending it to your friends, and by friends I mean every single person in your email adress book, your bringing in more potential votes to Starfish!
While your at it, why don't head on over to http://starfishlighthouse.blogspot.com/, the author's own blog dedicated to Starfish!
Third-ing that, I mean.
Can I THIRD that? Guess I already am...
Yes, fellow zudites, aid us in this just endeavor- prove what we have long suspected, and vote for Starfish!
Doctor,
Are you implying that if STARFISH would've jumped into first place today that might've been conclusive?
I'd be fine with that.
Go ahead, people, prove me evil- vote for STARFISH!
-Rob
@mpd & rob:
"Conclusive" evidence is the key word in that statement.
Not to many heroes(heroines) with a jetpack. A modernized rocketeer. Pretty cool.
I found out about your comic from Exiern.
Both the art and story are great so far, and the hints of what's coming make it better. I look forward to seeing more!
wuss up zudiez we all family now ! Im even gonna include that punk ass dshide !mpd yuos my dogg now and doc you like the guru! heres a rhyme for all yo asses ! 1 fish ,2 fish ,3fish 4
1 panel 2 panel 3 panel, more!, novie's not that far from takin the lead .this strip deserves it we've all agreed!
Cold, yes, but there's no conclusive evidence that it's evil.
-Rob
Doc, Rob's logic is cold and evil BEWARE!
@ptiminony
I'm inclined to agree
@mpd
That's just bloody brilliant (to use sentence enhancers more common to our brothers overseas. Wait- is using that term offensive, or just considered a minced oath?)
@BoyO
I don't think anyone yet was really offended, and I wasn't trying to rain on your parade, I just wanted to let you know that a few of your rhymes might have been offensive to others in the future. But seriously don't worry, I don't think anyone was that upset. I think your posts have been some of the most hilarious I've seen yet on Zuda.
@RKB
The blog was definitely a decisive factor for me, and then Rob's logic clinched it for me.
And Heightened Intelligence has soared ahead!
Personally, I think this thread has been a lot of fun. The kinder-gentler DShide is an easier pill to swallow, BoyO is amusing if he's a parody and bemusing if he's sincere, and Mpd consistently demonstrates the fabled British wit.
Also, Starfish is a great comic, and the debate about it in between the other stuff is a good read. Best of luck to Starfish!
Peter
@BoyO - You're my new fwend! Let that be an end! I've tried to be 'youth' but I'm too uncouth! Enough of this hatin'! Let's start celebratin'! I'm too white to rap! Enough of this crap! I'm too old to flow! And I'm not too good at rhyming either!
Do you see what I did there? Is there no end to my genius!
Hey you got Boyo, ninth doctor, rob and me plus who knows who else yet. I think your blog (at least for me) helped people give the comic another look or 2 or 3, and decide to cast there vote here. Plus it is not like there are that many super-hero comics that have won on Zuda? actually there is none. Bayou, High-Moon, Night Owls, Pray for Death, Super-Tron and Starfish would have most of the genre's covered. Who needs genre contests? It's still a ways from being over, good luck!
Can't we all just get along? see! you all feel me I only want to spread joy not hate all my flows is positives not negatives I make people laugh thats what I do ! i hopes none a yall took me seriously !i represent ! I'm going to retire my avatar and my comments sorry if I offended anyone . Thanks for and to everyone that voted for this strip This writer has stayed genuine and fair to everyone that has commented in any aspect. Good luck Ego !
That convinced me. Starfish has my vote.
Allright.
Most of you know I'm pretty puritanical in my voting practices. It's kind of gotten to be a point of humor for regular posters and, well, I certainly deserve it.
Normally I look really hard for the kind of comics that couldn't flourish or even exist very well in the print market for the material I'd like to see be given a chance here at Zuda. I want to vote for things I enjoy reading, certainly, but I want them to be things I probably couldn't find in a comic-shop.
This month's round of competitors, all talented mind you, didn't provide me with that.
There's nothing very new in the fare offered for us all to consider this month.
.
New isn't that important of course, hell, the industry's been stuck in less than six genre's for more than six decades and there's certainly been exciting and fresh material even within that precept.
What makes re-invention of the same conventional genres still important to new readers after years of conventional treatment is, in my opinion, two distinctive things; schism and tradition. The ability to move on and look back.
.
In a contest that lacks variety of fresh narrative approach readers, and voters, have to look hard at other less obvious qualities of expression. We could look at simple issues like which pitch has a better chance of becoming a movie or television show, but that would make me less of a comic reader and more of a Nielsen Box.
Heart and sincerity are HUGE elements of the unique and personal element of comics as a singular and idiosyncratic story-telling medium. I'll stay away from SUPERMAN because it seems to cause problems, but how much does heart and sincerity play a factor in C.C. Beck's CAPTAIN MARVEL? Doesn't the heart exhibited there make it possible to read through all the other tropes and conventions of the day and still make that work intriguing and valuable today?
Alright, Miguel. You win. Sincerity is the new New.
Lacking some re-invention of web- media from the contestants this month, how could I not appreciate the heart and integrity you've brought to this character and her adventures? Which contestant is giving me more or different or better? Which one is bringing more heart to the work?
.
STARFISH definitely and decidedly has my vote.
-Rob
Thanks Doc for your confidence in this as a property, really keeps me motivated to think there IS a fanbase a brewin' about li'l Novie here. My first hope is that it CAN be published here at Zuda, I'm really liking the atmosphere here, good and bad... and on that NOTE... Let's keep it civil guys, I'm really impressed by how this comic has brought intial detractors around. I love all the advocacy it's being given, but let's not bash other would-be fans or critics. I'm not the least bit afraid of criticism and most often than not, work very hard to fix elements that are accurately pointed out as being lacking. Criticism makes for a stronger community methinks and we all have to have the freedom to speak out without the fear of getting too personal. Champion the cause and don't poison the well, to mix a metaphor rather bluntly. I'd also like to thank all those Zudites out there that have made Starfish one of their favorites even if you haven't voted one way or the other, I greatly appreciate it.
Hey BoyO, I know that you don't mean for your comments to be interpreted as racist, and you know that, but someone that just browses a few posts won't. Yeah, "cracker" is a racial slur, it just doesn't have the historically negative context that other slurs do.
____________________________________
This part of my post is addressed to everyone: every poster and their grandmother has flamed DShide at this point. Let's just let it go. If anyone has a problem with the way he words his posts, don't respond in the same manner back at him.
________________________________
So, at this point, Starfish almost has my vote. The two things that are holding me back, are that, no matter how brilliant it is, I'm finding it hard to vote for a superhero comic this soon in zuda's life, and two that I really think this could succeed immensely in print. (Speaking of, zuda better put out tpb's of their ongoings. If this wins and it never sees a collection, many will be quite angry.)
Did boyO just use the word "advocacy" correctly in a sentence?
Well, that may bust his image, but it shouldn't deter intelligent comments about Miguel's strip. See, both boyO and I are advocates for the work exhibited here.
Would'a thought?
-Rob
funny this is comminng from a guy who practically belittled every story in this comp . I read all your comments and I think you mabe got a taste of your own medicine my advocacy scares you thats why your so melancholy now huh busta oh let me guess thats racial too! how bowt frog !
