Avaste Ye
Avaste Ye! is © Kevin Cygan & Daniel H. Irving
When Fred is fired from his job as a computer support tech there is only one thing that he can do to stabilize his life — become a pirate. Forsaking the rules and regulations that govern the modern world, he builds a sea-worthy vessel and with the help of his best friend Tom, sets sail for adventure. Armed only with the nautical knowledge he picked up in night school and a crew of would-be pirates, they shove off in hopes of finding adventure, freedom, and most importantly — treasure. The only thing standing in their way is a horde of angry ninjas, vengeful pirate ghosts and every once in a while, the cold hard slap of reality.

awesome love it..XD

I love it! It seems' like a typical daydream of mine...Pirates...heheeh. Brilliant!!
Well thats all right then!
we did continue the comic. you can find more pages at http://www.drunkduck.com/Avast_Ye/
I agree with mister matthews. The art did throw me off a bit too, but it was actually very funny. you should expand on it and make it longer.
The art was what threw me off at the start, but after reading it only makes the story funnier. Great humour and jokes thrown in, well done.
Honestly the art threw me off a bit at first glance, but after reading it I see that it only enhances the humor. This literally had me in tears. X*D

Great work! Only comic here that made me chuckle! More, please!
Four outta five stars. The humor is great. The art is really simple but adds to the ridiculousness. Worth reading.
This is awesome there have been so many times i actually thought about becoming a pirate and quit my life and really start living

Thanks. :)
take a look at the blog comic that was set up for battlefield babysitter. it's a bunch of thumbnails to scroll through. it just annoys me. i've seen some that use comixpress that are set up differently. those work better but it's just my opinion.
Bongotezz: I just thought I would ask you why comics on blogs are irritating for you to read? I was thinking of going the blog route instead of something like drunkduck, or smackjeeves, but I might have to rethink that. Any advice on how to blog a comic so it goes over better format wise?

Well, here's one guy that will be supporting Avast Ye in whatever form he can. Whether it's merchandise, collections, or just tuning in every monday, I'll be there, and I'm sure that many of those here feel the same way.
Good luck to you guys!
it might be able to survive on its own but i neither have the time nor the cash to get my own site and comics on blogs are very irritating to read. maybe someday if it actually makes us money i'll put it on it's own site.
I'm not trying to put down drunkduck, its just that Avast Ye did so well I expected that it would already be ready to survive on its own. But then I'm not the pro, I'm just a reader...
Wait, drunkduck? Is that permanent? I would have thought Avast ye had grown enough of a fanbase that it could not only support itself on its own site, but go beyond that.
Coyote forced me to rename the comic so the new link is

and the contest is over. congratz to Pray for Death. thanks to everyone who took the time to read Avaste Ye and post your comments; both positive and negative. as soon as i get the OK from Zuda i'll repost the comics on another site. Avaste Ye will continue. check back here for the link to its new home.
good good. 4 stars!
I'm laughing and wanting more
Funny gags but when artists use the stick-figure approach without story justification it turns me off.
I like the strip I'd just like to see it with a visual style more fitting its themes.
HAHA. i have not heard that one but it's funny.
Short version: A Pirate ship is sailing about on the sea when the first mate spots another ship bearing down. He tells the captain, and the Captain says, "Bring me my RED SHIRT!"
So he puts his shirt on, they go into battle and they win! There is much rejoicing.
The next day, the first mate sees 5 ships bearing down. The Captain again says, "Bring me my RED SHIRT!" He puts it on, they do battle and they win!
So, the first mate says to the Captain, "What's the story with the red shirt? Every time we go into battle you call for it and we win! Is it magic?"
"No no," the Captain replies, "I wear the red shirt so that when I get cut, the men won't see me bleed, and they don't lose heart!"
The next day the first mate sees 50 ships closing in. He says to the captain, "FIFTY SHIPS! Shall I bring you your red shirt?"
The Captain says, "No, bring me my BROWN PANTS!"
is the red shirt joke about star trek?
Djoo guys ever hear the red shirt joke?

The Knave of Krypton's comic strip format interview with the guys from Avaste Ye is now online at www.knaveofkrypton.com/interviews.html.
Why did the pirate go to the movies?
'Cause it was rated ARRR!
If we started posting as many bad pirate jokes as we could think of, would that cause a spike in the ratings? Hmmm...
Why is this comic not rated number one right now? LAME!
If you don't win, don't stop doing it man. It's amazing.
hey guys. thanks for the comments.
@Kidgloves the comic is actually made in adobe illustrator. I've seen a lot of people guess at what program was used to make it and most people think it's done in mspaint. i need a really advanced graphic program to make something this simple looking. :) i actually chose this style on purpose because it compliments the wacky writing.
jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja
This is the funniest thing at Zuda, Great Work.
I know this strip has been getting knocked for it's art, but to me it might be the most original art/strip on here this month.
Heck, I think the art adds to the humor. It's almost takes it to the realm of the absurd. Like how Gilliam did on Python with cutouts.
Now is this Python or Gilliam? No, but it's stick figure pirates.
Sure, maybe it is a case that the art is done this way, because of some lack of talent. Who cares? It's someone who took the tools at their disposal and did something with it. It's computer folk-art.
Truth be told the pacing, visual storytelling is better than some stuff being put out monthly.
Plus, the fact it's a webcomic, done completely with art produce on a computer(CorelDraw?) is, well, kinda cool.
Hey Guys!
Ok, in my way to see comic books, just a good plot is not enough... Draw is important... I'm a penciler (not a good one, but, you know...), so I guess that, if I thinking diferent, probrably work on wrong business, right!
HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE
Ok...I can't tell if I like or not. Sorry... But, hey, you "IN" right, so...
I guess, my opinion not really matters, so...
Keeping working and Congrats!

Frank, you are by far the coolest poster ever for the Mystery Men username alone.
Hahaha! The age of pirates lives on with Avast Ye!
Hilarious. Who cares if the art is simplistic and not very special if it is this funny. One I can certainly see myself following.
Aarrr!
thanks for the nice review rbr. it's been awhile since i've been here. i see we got a bunch more page views but the comments section has slowed down. not just for us but for most of comics. thanks everyone for stopping by and reading the comic.
Avast Ye is very different from what one sees from DC's print imprints, but then... Pirates don't have ta listen ta no rules!
Comics, for me, is basically the trick of creating the illusion of time passing over a series of static images. In the end, that's what all comics are, whether it's a posed Jim Lee affair or the manic energy of Walt Simonson sequentials.
Avast Ye strips the form down to its basics -- it's the Plastic Ono Band of comics* (*John Lennon's first solo album, featuring straight-forward songs with relatively simple arrangements). Lennon uses the scream and the riff, Avast Ye uses the gutter and the page.
The first page sets up a pretty convincing sitcom pace with the "blink-blink" panel in the bottom row. Nice comic timing, and any the scene changes happen between pages. Visual language of the sitcom is also evident in the choice of shots: most of the action is middle ground, but we can also move in closer for specific character moments (see page 4, for instance). (Interesting that a staple of sitcoms, the establishing shot, is nowhere to be seen here -- an improvement of the form!)
Most sitcoms on TV make me wretch -- the only one I can stomach these days is 30 Rock -- but I like Avast Ye quite a lot, and I think it's because I get to hear the voices exactly how I like, and visualize the action in the way that suits me best.
So in a way... I like this because I'm brilliant!
Anyway, just sorting through some of my reactions, as this is the first "stick-figure" strip I've enjoyed. (Mind you, this is also the only "stick-figure" strip I've ever read.)
thanks everyone for stopping buy, reading and commenting. and since no one can read coyote's post **waves hand** it says that Avaste Ye will not be continued unless we win so vote vote vote and have your friends vote too.
