In Maps & Legends
Kaitlin Grayson doesn't know why she gets up in the middle of the night to carve a map onto the wall of the spare room of her apartment. Before she can finish it, though, a strange man named Bartamus shows up at her place in the middle of a wintry night, claiming to be from another, dying world that desperately needs Kait’s help.
The map somehow connects our world to Bartamus' world, where strange powers work to drain that land's resources to build more gateways and spread their influence to even more worlds. Including Earth.
Bridges and cities burn on Bartamus' world, and the air is tainted with pollution. His world needs help, soon, and Bartamus is convinced that only Kait can save it.
Kait must decide how to best use her unique skills without forever carrying the destiny -- and weight -- of two worlds on her back.

(At least that's what I keep telling myself as I script out the next chunk of pages on this comic!)
Bryy -- great news! The story is 95% of the battle. Everything else will fall into place once you've got the story. Just have to find a way to tell it in the best way possible. Good luck with the artist search.
Michael,
Thanks. I as of now have "Friendship in the Time of Werewolves" written out fully - some on paper, some in my head. Artists are fickle. As I already said, I've went through at least five.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting, CA3 and df2506! I agree, it's hard to get a lot of story into 8 pages, but I hope Niki and I were able to tweak your curiosity. We've got a lot of story to pack into season one, so keep an eye out for page 9 in March. Can't wait!
Very interesting comic.
I don't really know what to say. Zuda does a fairly good job of making sure that only good well illustrated stories get so far as to be presented to viewers, but the eight page limit they set really forces stories to hit you hard right out of the gate. Your story clearly has a good deal of potential and the illustrator clearly delivers a solid compliment to the writing, but I can really only say that I'm curious to see more after only this much. I hope that you get the time and opportunity to develop this story for audiences.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Johnny, Mark, piperez, David, and Barry! Niki did a bang-up job with the layouts and drawings, and it was her suggestion to run the smaller panels at the bottom.
...
And wait 'til you see what's coming next! Can't wait to share it with everyone.
Love the atmosphere to this story. I enjoyed the smaller panels working separately at the bottom, that was a great touch. Interesting artwork as well, very loose and full of expression!
I want page 9 already!!! :D ;)
That's some badass cliffhangerism going on there. A win well deserved. Damn, these people are RAISING THE BAR.
Congrats, Michael. This was a stand-out entry. Glad to see it will be continuing.
Congrats! Page 8 is diabolical :)
Thanks again for all the kind words and congrats. I'm fighting the urge to respond to every single one of you, I'm so pumped up. Instead, I think I'll go read some more of the kick-ass comics here on this site. Got some catching up to do...
congrats!
Congratulations, and welcome to the Zuda team. Thats a fine comic you've got going on here.
Amazing work guys congratulations :)
Congratulations on claiming top spot! It'll be interesting to see how this one plays out in the future and I look forward to seeing the series carry on.

Thanks you guys! We can't wait to start running alongside all of you.

...
@infernalbbq - we submitted our pages on 8/25, and got the word we'd made the competition on 10/26 -- right at two months. I have more info at my website: http://michaeljasper.wordpress.com/2009/11/06/building-a-comic-panel-by-panel/
Sweet. Congratulations Niki and Micheal, awesome victory!
Congrats on the win! Can I ask one question? How long after submitting this did it appear in a competition? Within 3 months or longer, sooner?
Congrats, Michael and Elae! There's a real confidence in both the art and story here that gives the sense that one is in good hands, and in for quite a tale. Proud to have you join our ranks!
Congrats on the win! I know it was a hard battle...now relax.
Congratulations on the win! Looking forward to more.
W00T! Welcome to the team, Niki and Michael! :)
Well, this is where my vote went, so... yay! Welcome to Zuda, guys. :o)

Well deserved. Congratulations.
Well done. Congratulations.
YIPPEEE!!
Congrats to you both, Niki and Mike.
And Benito, you are so talented! I think yours may have been the first entry to crack 1,000 votes if I'm not mistaken (anybody on here know?)
I had your entry and this one as my down to the wire picks (but yeah, I was pulling for this one, I cannot lie).
Benito, I hope ZUDA does right by you, because you're a classy guy and your artwork is stellar!
Wow -- thanks for all the congrats, everyone! I'm still a bit thunderstruck by it all. It was a stressful month, and I'm glad to have helped pull some new readers to the Zuda site (and thanks to Benito and the other competitors for doing the same).
...
And I'm looking forward to continuing Kait's story, with the amazing artwork of Niki Smith accompanying my words.
...
