Kevin Burke just can’t seem to stop fighting. As a result, he’s having a really hard time getting an education.
After Kevin gets himself kicked out of three high schools, his grandfather gives him one more chance and sends him to the prestigious Vendrell Academy. It’s one of the toughest high schools in the nation. Kevin might just be in over his head.
As Kevin wrestles with his own temper, he will meet a whole new group of teenagers. Some of them deserve beatings, and some of them don’t. Kevin just wants to be a model student. Maybe, this time, he can do it.
Or, maybe not.

Sorry it took me so long man.
great work, very interesting.
I can't wait to see more, Joe!
Pretty OK overall. I think if you tightened up the art a bit (things get wonky in a few places, and the coloring is kind of meh), and learned to use some action lines in the action - you'd have had a great comic.
It's ok here, but if could have been better with a little more effort.
You have a very good sense of storytelling! It seems that people usually go Ga-Ga over the strips about "the One" and this month doesn't seem to be any different unfortunately. While I thought the other competitors had good strips, yours seemed the most well rounded. Good luck sir. You certainly have a future in this business.
I'm a fan of the artwork, and can't wait to see more!
@brownster - Hey, no need for name calling, everyone on Zuda is entitled to their opinion!
@frequentcontributor: You're a very discerning Zuda reader, so I'm proud to have won your vote. Thanks!
Way to develop a whole lot in a short time! Crisp art. Nice thread with the mysterious girl he's supposed to know (typical guy - he forgot - or maybe not...). I also want to know what the principal is up to... Great work!
Nice work, Joe. I'm going to be honest and say the art could be better, but nevertheless it's solid, and the storytelling really pulls this one through. Good luck!
Just tossed a vote your way. Your comic is the best, this month. Hope you get a chance to continue it.
this is AWESOME, i dunno what that douche-bag PowFlips problem is. I guess the world needs retards.
Good stuff. Neat hook. I didn't see it coming. The art is kinda simple but it works.
@Wei2k: Thanks for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it.
@FatCat: Thanks! And nice avatar!
I dig it! Good story and sequential art plus no super-stuff…Awesome!!!
btw, I think you're art is really good. just there're 2 or 3 guys this month who could give Will Eisner a run for his money.
Really strong stuff overall. It's tough cause this month I feel like there're a few submissions that have stronger art, but you probably have the best story, which is just as important if not more so. Anyhow, great job with the comic. Gonna need more time to figure out who to vote for.
Apparently Paul Reiser has a much lower profile than I thought. :)
I like the story, and the art serves it well, but I wish that the comedy were a little "darker". Not only is the "Paul Reiser" reference 15 years too late, but assuming that a 16 year old kid would even know who that was is silly (half of teens don't even know who Michael Jackson is...). Also, everyone keeps saying the kid has a girls haircut, but the art doesn't show it and so the "joke" falls flat. Otherwise, the twist at the end seems like this might be getting interesting, but I just wish that this just had a bit more "bite" to it.
Model student rocks!
Great work! Good luck!
@PowFlip: Sorry it didn't work for you, but I appreciate you taking the time to articulate your thoughts. Have a good one!
I put off reading this because of the art. But now that I have read it, I'm more put off by the story. This type of "the trouble student gets to stay in school if he does X for the (insert authority figure here)" story has bee done to death already.
The action is too stiff. The coloring is well, not attractive. The pacing is ok, till the last couple pages when you suddenly plot dump on us using hundreds of words per page. I know you only have 8 pages to work with, but surely you could have thought of a more graceful way to set up the plot.
On the upside the characters are good. You could maybe pull off this type of story.... but I think you'd do better to try out something a little more original.
Preposterously great.
Thanks for the kind words, everyone! I'm so excited to be in 2nd place after the first week! I really truly appreciate all the support!!!
@nasquared: It's a big relief to me that the storytelling is clear. It was a big concern for me throughout the entire process.
Anyone who has supported myself and Model Student, thank you SO MUCH!
I love the sarcastic flow of it. Great stuff here.
good job joe!!!!!!!! i was actually hoping for more than 8 pages. its awesome! i favorited it and voted! i'll help spread the word!
Good pacing. Really, the best storytelling out of the bunch this month. I haven't made it all the way through the list yet, but so far it's looking like you'll have my vote. Good luck!
Very good story telling and panel design! Fun and action-packed! I dig it.
This flows nicely and grabs your attention. Just eight pages and I'm hooked! I don't usually make it past page 3. ;D Nice work, I hope you win! Good luck!
You've got my vote, Joe!
I wonder if this how James Bond started out.
I like your premise its original.
Good luck in the competition.
Three words; Canis Canem Edit.
You got my vote! Good luck!
ThIS IS AWESOME, I LOSE FAITH IN HUMANITY IF THIS DOESN"T WIN, OH MY GOD MY HAIR IS ON FIRE
Sure hope Zuda will let us see where this story goes!
Howdy. If you're interested, my review of this comic can be read here. Good luck with the competition:

Nice layouts, and the story never lets up. Nice twist at the end, too.
This is great!
i lOVE it! and... its a Kubert School kid!!! ROCK!!!!!
Great job, son. We could use a few more model students
love that pose on panel 5.
Liked your use of the ol' finger in th' face, very effective!( Man, that's irritating, aint it?). Am partial to green & purple, liked your use of them in your backgrounds.
Solid pacing! Cool stuff...
Model Student is my favorite by far! I'm hooked on the story and anxious to see what comes next. The story line, art style, coloring, composition, frame layout and content: very nice! I especially like the symbolism on pgs 1,7 and 8. There's a lot going on in just 8 pages. Great work!
I like it. Interesting idea and the art is pretty solid if a bit rough here and there. The dialogue could use some polishing. Oh, and Paul Reiser? Really? Does anyone under 40 even remember who that is? :D
good story, nice artworks, unique Joe Bowen style!
