Dubbed the "Abomination" because of his appearance, Roan carries within his human body the Blood of a mystical and nearly extinct race known as the Ancients. Blood, which manifests itself in exceptional strength and physical mutation. Blood that earned him imprisonment in the Veresta Stadium, where pure-blooded humans force him to fight in gladiatorial games.
Nearly broken, Roan jumps at the prospect of freedom when a mysterious girl named Dara appears at his cell. She offers him a chance at a new life in exchange for his help, but refuses to release him until he binds himself to her mission with a sacred oath known only by the Ancients.
Tied to Dara by words as old as his Blood, Roan has no choice but to join her and her cohorts on a quest to track down an Ancient artifact. Dara is desperate to find it, believing that it will unlock the mystery of her own past. Elnor, her bodyguard, is sworn to protect Dara by a contract, but her true desire is to keep herself safe, even at Dara's expense. Caspian is a member of a secret society sworn to conceal the Ancient artifact and keep it out of the hands of those with Ancient Blood.
Roan cares only for his freedom until a new player joins the game and threatens the very existence of humanity. Now Roan must make a choice: Overcome a lifetime of humiliation, repression and rage, and protect the people that imprisoned him, or walk away and allow humanity to suffer the consequences of its mission to suppress the Ancient Blood.

Very interesting. Like the opening scenes of a movie, when many questions are asked. I can't wait to hear them answered.
@Blaque & nakedzombie--thanks so much! It's nice to see that people are getting that this 8-page submission isn't designed to stand on its own and tell the whole story in the opening scene. We've been a bit absent from Zuda in the last week, working on the next installments of the story. One way or another, the story is going to go on!
This was really enjoyable, and really refreshing subject matter. Would definitely make it a regular read. The art and narrative go well together, and you haven't lumped too much or spaced out too little on your eight pages and it ends well. Definitely better than at least the current top two placers!
This was really fun to read, not enough of that in comics if you ask me. I really love the mix of architectural designs (I saw Victorian - particularly the lamps - and other influences including Greek of course). Also, I enjoyed the panel layouts and how you used such simplistic elements as how dark or light something was to draw it into or out of focus. Very nice. An inspiration.
@RKB-thanks for the in-depth critique! Hopefully you'll keep reading long enough (y'know, once we get to posting it) to understand why Roan can't be TOO scary ;-)
@vitri0l-glad you like. You probably made Nathan's day a little better!
really digging the art!
My review here:

@bob-the wings just got in the way...of everything...he's much easier to manage this way!
@Monstar--thank ya kindly!
@odojohn-that was the point, to leave the audience with a snapshot of the story overall, not just the 8-page submission. There is a lot more plot to come, and I really hope these 8 pages aren't the most interesting!
@farlander--that's awesome!!! It's like the party after the competition is over ;-)
Crossover!

I liked the art but the story... The synopsis is giving too much information away. This needs a slower build. Everything in the synopsis would have made good story. The story that was drawn wasn't even close to the most interesting part.
Great work, you got my vote this month... lets hope you can pull out a win!
Dreaming in technicolor indeed. Must be great to see those dreams come to life. Here's hoping you win.
So out of curiosity, why'd you clip his wings? I thought they raised some interesting questions and expectations, like when or if they'd get repaired and if he'd take off for the clouds.
@RBurton & Seth--glad ya dig! I'm partial to her myself...Seth--I see you took over our 4th place last week...booo. Ah well, I'll get over it ;-) Good luck with the next couple weeks!
I really dig page 6 and the design of Dara. Nice job! Good luck!
So, I really dig Dara. And the costumes. I just wish you had more pages to let the story breathe.
@Farlander-thanks for the critique. As this projects expands, we may be able to add some of the detail that is now occurring between the current pages, and hopefully get back some of that personality that's lacking.
part ii (sorry)
Nadja, I can tell you put some effort into the plot, and it appears to be epic in scope, which makes the 8 pages all the more restrictive. It's rough starting the story in such a limited way, and fashioning a compelling vignette as well, and I think you missed the mark by *this* much. I really would've liked a bit of a hook at the end to encourage my interest in what happens next.
My other issue that Dara, the main character ostensibly, seems to lie rather flat on the page. I would love to see a bit more personality from her, right now she just seems to move the plot along.
Again, overall strong work, I think it just needs a bit more time in the oven.
Not my favorite submission this month, but I think there are some strong points worth mentioning.
Nathan, your art is solid but the style is not quite my cup o' tea. The backgrounds are your strength, there is consistency, detail and the perspective is right on. I feel your characters are a bit stiff however. I would love to see if you can find some more energy and expression in the figures by loosening up a bit. The character design could use a bit of a push as well. The way the characters look is the surest way to start to establish how your viewers feel about them, try and put some more personality in your designs.
Hey! Almost completely forgot, I'm involved in a comic contest here. Maybe I should actually post or something. Thanks, Nadja, for keeping track of things for me. You see, I've been busy working on MORE IMPURE BLOOD!!! Win or lose, there's way more to come. Thanks for all the comments and critiques everyone. If you liked the work, be sure to keep following. If you don't... well... keep doing... other stuff.
@doomsday--plenty of time left! Go IB!
@mizu & makn, sorry it falls outside your personal tastes...if you find the elusive recipe that pleases everybody, let me know! ;-)
@mpd--thanks!! We like them...and are dreaming of the day we spot our first Elnors and Caspians at a Con :-P!
I liked the costumes :-)
The art is OK but could be better in parts. The coloring was distracting. Instead of helping the panels it was a bit jarring. Backgrounds should have been darker, less noticable, etc...the story is OK so far. Still has a lot to prove at this point.
Hmm... I'm not very fond of this style. It reminds me of the guest comics in our school's monthly magazine. The art didn't impress me and the coloring is completely far from my taste. Too many colors gathered all together. I know I'm being fussy and against the commenting mainstream, but I can't help it. I always love fantasy stories, but always have my restraints in reading comics which art I don't like...
fourth place...you still got time.
@Blue--ah yes...the curse of the page limit...thanks for taking the time to comment even though the story hasn't grabbed you yet.
@Scott--thanks for the positive on the storytelling & Roan's character design.
@king--we have plenty of cool settings and characters to come! You will be seeing more Impure Blood in the future!
This comic is a fun adventure! The art is strong, the action scenes are well plotted. They're not oppressively intense, but the art is strong and clear and pulls you into the scene. The writing shows of promise, and the characters and setting are both cool. I like this a lot and would definitely keep reading
Howdy. I recently posted reviews of this month's competitors on my website and thought you might be interested. The article can be found here:

Good luck and keep on creating.
That was neat, but it didn't feel like it was taking me anywhere. The synopsis, of course, gave me an idea...just needed more to give me an idea of whether I'd enjoy the tale.
@Ricksta-can't believe we went this long before our first Elnor comment! Thanks for reading.
@Pathnine-thanks for the compliments, glad you're enjoying it.
Dear Nathan and Nadja, This comic was very impressive! The art was great, especially the costumes. I liked the dialog a lot, and the lettering was nice too. Congrats on making it into this month's contest! I'd like to talk to your team leader about an idea I have if you have a moment to send me an e-mail... my address is captioncomix (at) gmail.com. Thanks for you consideration! -Daniel
The detail in the backgrounds, the colors and Elnor are awesome!
@Aduz--more, more, more, we have more! You'll just have to wait 'til the end of the month...
@Stevo-thank ya, thank ya, thank ya
@Jeebus--plenty more Steampunk influence coming up!
@Mockery - it's certainly meant to be exciting! Glad you're liking it so far. The plot is just getting rolling...plenty more excitement to come!
Thanks to everybody who's reading & taking the time to leave comments--all the yays and the nays--for us!
This is going to be exciting, I can just tell. that and I love the coloring and the art. Very smooth, solid and engaging.
A very engaging story, I'd love to read more. And I liked Dara's design a lot, very Steampunk.
I loved it! Great art and coloring, interesting story.
More, more, more, I want to read and see more. Great detailed artwork, story has me spellbound. Keep it up, you have my vote.
@influenza-Nathan will love you for loving the lawyer gag.
@Viviana-muchas gracias! or maybe mille grazie! ...wasn't sure which...
@frequent-the quest is intro'd when Dara offers Roan conditional freedom, sorry it didn't grab you. thanks for taking the time to read it anyway!
@scott-glad it's working for you!
Nice! Best of the bunch in plot, pacing, characters and art.
Too much pointless action at the beginning made me lose interest in the characters, and a lot of boring and confusing escape scenes doesn't really clue me in as to what is going to happen in later chapters. If we had been given some hint of the quest or some actual characterization, this might have been better.
buenisimo ,excelente!!!
Great job! My vote is yours... lol @ lawyers.
@Gnar-we aim to please! onomatopoeias are so much fun...
@CC-you are a peach! Thanks for the support!
@C Edward-glad to get a compliment on the premise, and oh yeah, the whole art thing too ;-)
@willyNilly-we'd love to show more! Tell your friends!
Wow...could one girl use any more exclamation points?
Well done, great detail in the artwork, interesting story, would like to see more!
Interesting premise and solid art. Good luck with it.
I love it! The action comes quick and fast, the characters shine. This is a fun read.
Engaging! Colorful! "SPRUNCH!!" on the 1st panel! Fast start = brownie points in my book! Great entry.
Yeesh. First my lawyer gag takes a hit, and now this "arms" thing. Sigh. Guess I'll stick to drawing the pretty pictures...
