Pluck
Pluck is just a poor boy in a poor kingdom. Born low, sinking lower. Sure, he is always planning something big, but he is never quite able to rise above his station. Until now, that is. Seems he has stumbled across a magical amulet. Apparently, a very important amulet. Spoken of in one of those Ancient Prophecies. All he has to do is bring it back to the king and he'll officially become the Chosen One. Just like that. Savior of the Kingdom, adored by the royals, worshipped by the masses, all that good stuff he desires. Nothing left but a long easy life, getting filthy fat, writing bad poetry, and keeping the courtesans busy.
Of course, there are those pesky rumors, whispers about some looming threat. Some primal evil poised to ravage the land, eat the children, skin the men raw and hang their twitching skins from the treetops. Standard stuff, really, nothing but talk. And, besides, Pluck's got more important things on his mind; Courtesans, poetry, waistline. In that order. After all, a boy's got to prioritize.

awesome work dude
Pluck is coming. Meanwhile, enjoy these nuggets:

(surprised?)
Really good. Can't wait to read more of this. :)
I love the art in this comic, and the black and white really makes it unique - a bold choice, that I'm thinking pays off. As does the narration by the young lady. Like all the good openings here that have won, I wanna read MORE.
Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing what happens!
Congrats guys, this is HUGE!

Loving the last panel on page 8.

When does Gulch return?
Congrats on the win guys! Looks to be another great comic, can't wait to see more!
In case you are interested, I did a brief post-mortem on October's competition on my website, which can be found here:

Here's the link directly to the fanart on my blog: http://joshuaisaacwhite.blogspot.com/2009/11/fanart-for-pluck.html
I'm unsure when new pages will be up, but we're very excited to get started. I believe there's usually a month or two between winning the contest and going live. Stay tuned!
Not a fan of the mudslinging, either. From all sides. It's really unnecessary.
Any idea when new pages might be coming up for this one?
This story is gonna be killer, and John Amor is crushing it with his art style. I pay homage with my lowly fanart http://joshuaisaacwhite.blogspot.com.
Great work. DUDE!
Great work. DUDE!
you know what, I shouldn't even put it that way -- I have this remarkable ability to never know when to stop digging. WED is very professionally written and drawn and there's a definite fanbase for it. I withdraw my previous statement, and I'm throwing my shovel into the river now. :) maybe one day we can throw back a few at said bar.
you're quite right-- I didn't mean anything by it -- it seems I've developed a thin skin and was responding to a detractor and I apologize. And yes -- I can respect a creator and still be critical of certain of his works. :)
I agree. Let's just move on. Well done guys for winning this month.
-
But Pete, really? Kicking the opposition after you've beaten him?
-
"I think the comic's premise is very cynical in its attempt to be pure bait, to be honest, and I don't think it deserved to win."
-
Classy. Even if you try to say that there's respect for the creator when in the same breath you're trashing the work, you're still trashing the creator.
-
Guys who've been giving PLUCK crap on my behalf? Stop it. I didn't ask for that, I don't need it around my neck. Cheers.
Oh and for the record? The 'get a free book if you vote' managed five votes and was done more to get Vito's old book back out into his store. And I have no idea how we jumped 20,000 votes in a day with Doc Monster - but we sure as hell never jumped 15k more in three hours. Get your facts right the next time you come slinging mud, k?
-
See you at the convention bar.
Gabe and John - congrats, guys! Looking forward to more Pluck!
congratulations for the win :)
Davidlevack: Well put. At the end of the day, not everyone can have their first choice win. Let's all just try and move on.
it'd really be nice if the low brow bickering was somewhere else. I don't know why they put comments on these things. I imagine the creators would like to distance themselves from the ugliness. One guy defending this comic inadvertently puts down the other competitors. This is why I really don't like competition and why I wasn't too hyped on the fact this is a "contest". If you like it, you like it, if you don't you don't. If you're surprised something gets chosen, look back at Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles... the title says it all, who would have thought? It's not like this comic winning is going to keep your grandma from getting her angioplasty.
Lol, grumpy red stars with one comic faved. Page views can mean bots were employed to redirect traffic. Java scripts that refresh a page every few seconds have been around forever. Or that a lot of the same people who've already voted keep visiting over and over. Views mean jack. Seriously tho, when the comic you wanted didn't win even after stunts like:
1. rallying up an entire dorm to vote,
2. promising to include/name characters in the story after people and/or altering the plot for more votes, and
3. offering to give away free book copies at a bookstore to those who vote ...
PLUS its staunch supporters come over to the winning competitor and say it's RIGGED, well.
That just makes that losing comic look even worse. Yeah, paid a visit to the DC boards.
So you hate the winner, get over it. Wait for a new page and then if it sucks then get back to criticizing, because then at least your comments'd be valid. Contest is over. New one's starting. Move on. :)
lifeonmars: you're entitled to your opinion, but you're criticizing a comic on originality when your pick was zombies, werewolves, and vampires all thrown into one, with a pun for a title? (Where Eagles Dare, Where Evils Dare) I think the comic's premise is very cynical in its attempt to be pure bait, to be honest, and I don't think it deserved to win. All respect to Tony for having a lot of experience and skill in the craft, and props to the artist for being highly highly skilled -- but I gotta be honest.
in the first few days, the two other top ranking comics both got about 20,000 pageviews in one morning. it was very unusual. later in the contest, WED got another 10 or 15k in an hour or two. I still don't understand what happened with those, but other than those instances, pluck was competitive on page views, as a general measure of day to day progress. it just never got any sudden, gigantic shots in the arm like that.
in any case, raw views matter little, or perhaps not at all, when it comes to your ranking. the vote is what matters.
The top 3 were all very impressive in their respective rites, but I think there's something to be said for a comic that's a bit more original in its tone and approach, and I think pluck has a lot going for it and deserved to win (note I'm not tooting my own horn, my name is to the right, but I'm just a letterer, I don't have much to do with the creation of pluck).
I'd have to agree with thebug21, here. There's definitely something very fishy about this one winning. I think that all in all it was actually my least favourite entry. The art is great, but seriously? Fantasy stories with cringeworthy faux Olde English are ten a penny, and tired beyond belief. This one had a lower average rating than a many of the other entries, and when you look at the tiny number of page views it had compared to the other entrants below it, something just doesn't add up. It's disappointing, because I can't help but feel that the Zuda system has been abused once again, and more deserving entries lost out again as a result.
The constant harping about color makes people look ignorant. This is a well done comic. Well written, well drawn, and it shows a lot of promise. Congrats on the win, it is well deserved in a competition with several very strong entries. I sure didn't vote for this based on Gulch or as part of an established fan base. The top several competitors were pretty fantastic, I hope to see them continue somewhere. This was my favorite in this competition.
I still really do not know quite how this entry won. When you looked at the three entries who finished below Pluck in some cases this had only a third of the number of page views and a lower average reader rating than any of them.
And yet it won. Which kind of re-enforces all the criticisms people have over Zuda Comics. Don't pretend for a second that these contests have anything to do with the quality of the work. I'd argue that (And certainly in my own opinion) the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed entries were all stronger concepts than Pluck.
But if a pre-existing and organised fanbase is mobilised then the entry they are supporting will have its way rigged to the top.
I don't want to be a dick. I just think that's a little bit unfair, and not at all in the spirit of the competition.
Congrats and kudos guys!
congrats to the winners!!
congratulations to the Pluck crew,!
This is one of my faves!
Congratulations dudes!
